What does SLAM mean? – Definition, meaning & function

Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) is an algorithmic process. It enables a robot to simultaneously create a map of its surroundings (mapping) and localise itself within it (localisation) – without GPS or predefined maps. SLAM is therefore the technical approach or calculation method that allows autonomous mobile robots to operate in unknown and dynamic environments without colliding. It thus forms the basis for many modern navigation and positioning systems.
