What is a SLAM positioning system? – Definition & meaning

A SLAM positioning system is the practical implementation of the SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping) method in a real device. It consists of a combination of hardware (e.g. LiDAR sensors or cameras) and software that executes SLAM algorithms. The aim is to enable an AMR or vehicle to perform precise and continuous self-localisation in real time – even in complex or GPS-free environments. Such systems are mainly used in intralogistics, autonomous vehicles and robotics research.
